Mentor

Image
I  have had many mentors and people I have looked up to. Many people will say despite where I have come from, look at all I have done. However I think all of the people that have helped me get this far would agree that because of where we have come from we succeeded. If I had everything and grew up in a great neighborhood with two parents I doubt I would have been as successful as I am. I am not saying my dad not being there or growing up in a less fortunate neighborhood got me to where I am; I just realized that I did not want to stay where I was. I became ambitious and determined because I did not want to be in the environment I lived in forever. I think situations are what you make of them. On the other wes moore he goes to military school. Wes wanted nothing more than to go back home but it ended up helping him in the long run. It set him on a better path. The other wes saw the money his brother was making and despite what his brother told him about that life he fol...

Pranks

Image
I've been on the receiving end of many pranks having many cousins and two siblings. One that I remember to this day is a prank that was made on me by my own mother. It wasn't anything serious or malicious, it was all in good fun. My family is really into Disney, especially Winnie the Pooh. My cousin likes Piglet, my brother likes Eeyore, my sister likes Pooh and I love Tigger. I was around 7 years old and I remember coming back home from school. On the way home my mom kept on telling me that there was a surprise waiting for me at home. Like any other seven-year-old, I was pretty excited. When we got home there looked to be a Tigger plush on my bed. I was so excited about a new Tigger plushie I ran up and I hugged it. As I pulled it away it was only then that I realized it wasn't a Tigger it was a Pooh. I was scared and upset and with teary eyes looked back and said ”this isn’t a Tigger.” My mom was uncontrollably laughing.  I was sad because I felt lied to and was so excit...

Other Wes more week 4/11

Growing up I poured all my focus into school not really stopping and really connecting with people. That was my mindset till around the 5th grade. In the fifth grade, I made a large group of friends that were there for me in school but also cared about my life at home. Up until that point I had friends that were genuinely nice and great people but I also had friends who started rumors about me and bullied me. I didn't trust anyone but my family and school were just for education; I didn't need friends I remember thinking. Bad friends can drag you down and good friends can help your mental health.  Those friends helped me to break out of my shell a bit but I was still in my bubble. I continued to focus so much on school work that I made unnecessary sacrifices. School was my life and I let it consume me to not have to face the problems of reality. It definitely helped me to put an emphasis on school but it also hindered me socially. I got great grades but aside from speaking in f...

Environment in Which You Live

Image
In day to day life, we experience and absorb the things that are around us. The environment in which you live has a pivotal role in shaping our lives. Whether this is molding our relationships with friends, family, business, institutions, or even ourselves, the environment provides a lens through which we view aspects of our lives. In turn, the adage "That is why we are a product of our environment," is so ubiquitous. To contextualize this idea, imagine that you live in an area where scarce resources are causing you to develop mental traits to enhance your survival in such an environment. Imagine further that you use the aforementioned traits in a "fish out of water" scenario where you are in an area where there is excess and luxury. Surely, you would be out of place when compared to someone native to the environment. Therefore, our environment dictates who we are.  Furthermore, the environment you are around will dictate your expectations which is what you will s...
